What are Urinary Tract Infections?
A urinary tract infection, also called a "UTI," is a bacterial infection that affects any part of the urinary tract.
The primary etiologic agent related to urinary tract infections is the Escherichia coli bacteria also referred to as "E. coli."
Although urine contains a number of fluids, salts, and waste products that were processed/cleansed by the kidneys, urine does not normally have bacteria. When bacteria gets into the bladder or kidney and multiplies in the urine, urinary tract infections may result.
The most common type of urinary tract infections are acute cystitis often referred to as a bladder infection.
An infection of the upper urinary tract or kidney is known as pyelonephritis, and is potentially more serious. Although they cause discomfort, urinary tract infections can usually be easily treated with a short course of antibiotics. Urinary tract infections' symptoms include a frequent feeling or need to urinate, pain during urination, and cloudy urine.
Other Facts About Urinary Tract Infections:
The Escherichia coli (E. coli) bacteria is responsible for about 90% of all urinary tract infections as a result of the E. coli bacteria entering the bladder.
Bacteria that normally live in the large intestine - and present in bowel movements are the most common source of infection.
Sexual intercourse may move the E. coli bacteria into the urinary tract in women
Proper hygiene in women - and always wiping the vulva from "front to back" after using the restroom - helps prevent the bacteria from being transferred to the urethra, reducing the likelihood of getting a UTI
About 10 million doctor visits occur each year due to UTIs each year (in the U.S.)
20% of all women will have at least one urinary tract infection in her lifetime
Women experience about 80% of all UTIs due to women having a shorter urethra, which makes it easier for bacteria to reach the bladder
Untreated, the E. coli infection can move from the bladder into the kidneys which can cause a significantly more serious infection called pyelonephritis
Drinking
cranberry juice and eating cranberries can help prevent urinary tract
infections
